From the moment that your child enters the Preparatory School they will be able to benefit from the specialist subject teaching that we offer at The Buchan. Our highly experienced staff spend time getting to know every pupil in their charge and inspire, motivate and challenge all children to follow the Buchan vision statement Aim for excellence in all things and take full advantage of an island education for a global future.
Academic excellence is encouraged at every level and pupils are supported in their endeavours to build upon their prior knowledge and to develop a love of learning. We are aware that there is more to school life than academia and have developed a curriculum that gives every pupil the chance to shine. A new music teaching room equipped with a wide range of instruments, a well equipped Design Technology workshop, a dedicated drama studio, individual music practice rooms and the inspirational Art room are some of the busiest places in the school.
Beyond the classroom, we have excellent sporting facilities that include dedicated sports pitches and a modern sports hall. Our specialist physical education staff teach every pupil in the school and offer expertise in the teaching of PE, the major sports and swimming. As a result we are able to field teams that can certainly hold their own in rugby, football and netball matches. There are a number of sporting tours that are organised each year and competition for places is intense.
Once the main school day is over we offer a broad range of after-school activities to expose children to experiences beyond the curriculum – from an introduction to hockey through to modern dance; from construction to knitting.
We pride ourselves on the level of care that we give to children and our dedication to the happiness of every member of our community. Respect for the beliefs, rights and belongings of others is at the core of our pastoral care system as we look to develop every child's confidence and willingness to have a go.
