On the afternoon of Wednesday 16 June, in the glorious sunshine, The Buchan School’s beautiful new bandstand was officially opened. A sparkling programme of bright and tuneful music orchestrated and conducted by Miss Sue Mills, Head of Music, was played by the school’s Awesome Orchestra supported by the music peripatetic teachers, some staff members and a King William’s College pupil.
Refreshments were kindly provided by the school’s chef Mike Fletcher and his catering team as well as Davison’s ice creams.
About 100 pupils, staff members, parents and grandparents turned out for the event, many bringing picnics and deck chairs. They were joined by School governors Joanna Crookall, Sam Leahy and Professor Roger Berry. Joanna said, “It is wonderful to see the new Bandstand being used and enjoyed by the children at such a lovely, family orientated opening event.”
Father Huw Mordecai, Chaplain in residence at King William’s College, blessed the Bandstand and also announced the winner of a school competition to suggest an alternative use for it. The winner Amelia Darroch aged 6 suggested that the Bandstand be used as an open air art gallery.
The Bandstand, which was supplied by St John’s Saw Mills and made out of locally grown spruce and larch wood, was donated to the school by Friends At Buchan, (FAB). FAB is the Parent Teacher Association and one of its responsibilities is raising money for the purchase of specialist equipment, such as this, for the school.
Ann Atkinson, the Chairperson of FAB and the organiser of this event, thanked all who had helped raise money for the purchase of the Bandstand saying “It will provide an excellent outdoor learning environment for many students over many years to come.”
Friends At Buchan are currently raising money for a new mini bus for the school.
