As I write this I ask the question: Has a month really gone by since my last entry? Time is such an elastic commodity so, by virtue of the fact that it feels like it has passed quickly, I must come to the conclusion that we are all busy and occupied and, I hope, stimulated.
One look at the calendar would support this – scholarship exams and interviews to KWC, Sunday league rugby matches, football, netball and rugby matches against Kirkham Grammar school, a number of James’ school lunches, stars assembly, an African drumming workshop (which had all of the children and staff rapt), Form 3 trips to the rainforest, then more Sunday rugby which saw our U8, U9, U10 and U11 teams retain their unbeaten records for this season.
And this continues as we ran in towards half term with a celebration assembly from Form 1 and a folk group workshop at KWC.
Then I look at the outcome of all of the stimulation that the Buchan pupils receive and am both awed and inspired in equal measure. Before half term, Michael read out in assembly a piece of poetry that he had written recently which inspired me to challenge pupils to try and learn a poem over the half term break; I saw Nathan and Oliver work together to craft the opportunity for Nathan to score a fantastic set piece goal in their Inter-House football match; Reya and Phoebe worked smoothly and seamlessly to create another scoring opportunity for Phoebe in their Inter-House netball match. Such talent!
A wander down the corridors and a look at the displays will show you that children are being inspired to work and think in ever more complicated and detailed fashion – surely a good indicator of stimulus taking place in the learning environment.
And so we come full circle to the topic of time. Staff and pupils worked hard in the first half of term and all needed time to refresh, relax and replenish their creative juices. Now is the time for all to look forward and try their best in the coming days and weeks.
